Radical Relationships: Stay Curious, Be Less Critical 💡✨
Welcome to session eight of Reflections with Craig! Today, we are exploring one of the most powerful keys to maintaining strong bonds with our children, grandchildren, and friends: choosing to stay curious rather than critical.
As we grow older, it is easy to look at the younger generation and think, “Why are they like that?” But the real question we should be asking is, “What stage of life are they in, and what are they going through?”
Keys to Building Strong Connections:
- Quick to Listen: James 1:19 reminds us to be “quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger.” Stop rushing to offer unsolicited advice, point out mistakes, or throw out guilt trips.
- Meet Them in Their World: You don’t have to fully understand anime, TikTok, or modern music to care about how your grandkids experience the world. Ask about their interests! And yes—learning how to text or send emojis at 85 years old goes a long way!
- Keep Energy Positive: When loved ones call to ask how you’re doing, avoid turning the whole conversation into a list of doctor visits and physical aches. Keep the tone uplifting, tell them you love them, and focus on their lives.
- Be Intentional: Relationships don’t fade because of distance; they fade because of neglect. Put reminders on your calendar—like calling a specific grandchild every other Wednesday—and make the first move.
As Mother Teresa wisely said, “Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.”
What is one way you can show genuine interest in a younger relative’s world this week? 🕊️
